Fence Requirements for Pools and Spas

Most townships require fences around in-ground and above-ground pools or spas to ensure safety and code compliance. These regulations vary by locality but generally follow the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) standards. According to Section 421.10.1 of the BOCA code, pool fences must meet the following criteria:

• Minimum height of 48 inches
• At least 45 inches between the lowest top rail and highest bottom rail
• Picket spacing less than 4 inches
• Less than 4 inches clearance between the bottom rail and ground
• Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with latch mechanisms positioned at least 54 inches above the ground
• Gates must swing outward, away from the pool
